Castle Rock, CO Childcare: Improving Playtime With Your Child

Posted on 07-15-2016 | Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Castle Rock

For many parents the words “play with me!” bring a feeling of dread rather than enjoyment and it has nothing to do with how much they love their child! Sometimes it can be really difficult to jump into the world of make-believe and dress-up when your head is swimming with bills to pay, emails to respond to, and dinner to cook. As we all grow older our capacity for creative imaginative play can quickly diminish if not nurtured.

The role of playtime in your child’s life is more significant than you may realize. According to his book Playful Parenting, Dr. Lawrence Cohen concludes “Play allows parents to enter a child’s world, on the child’s terms, in order to foster closeness, confidence and connection… Sometimes it’s work mustering up enthusiasm when you feel bored or listless.” So to paraphrase – playtime is crucial in connecting with your child, but don’t let yourself be riddled with guilt when you become bored!

There are a few simple steps you can take to help make playtime more enjoyable – and even in your boredom, be encouraged that you are creating lasting connections with your child that will help him connect to you as he grows older!

1.Get creative with your playtime – Sometimes we can get stuck in a playtime rut by doing the same things for play – which can obviously lead to boredom! Suggest new ways to play the next time your child wants to hang out with you. Make homemade play-dough, go outside on a nature walk, play dress-up, etc.

2.Introduce ways that you enjoy playing to your child - While it’s important that your child do most of the directing as you play together, feel free to show them how you like to spend your time as a means of connecting with them. Write a poem, read a book, paint your nails etc. This allows your child to get to know you a bit better and remind you that you can still have fun playing as a grown-up!

3.Set aside specific time - Set a timer or alarm for 30 minutes to an hour and give your child your undivided attention. No phone or making dinner during playtime. Just play!

4.Remember that play can happen throughout the day - There are obvious times of the day when your child will play, but you can also play during trips to the grocery store, while driving in the car, getting ready for school, etc.

5.Enjoy your child - Even if the thought of playtime is stressful for you as a parent, view the opportunity as an adventure to have with your child. Make an effort to discover new aspects of your child that you may not have noticed at first. Sharing these discoveries with your spouse or close friends may also encourage you to spend more time playing!
